This is where Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy comes in.
PRP is an advanced form of regenerative medicine that uses your body’s own natural healing system to repair damaged cartilage, tendons, ligaments, and muscles. Here is everything you need to know about how it works, what to expect, and how to ensure the best possible outcome for your treatment.
Your blood is mostly made of a liquid called plasma, but it also contains red cells, white cells, and platelets. While platelets are most famous for helping blood clot when you get a cut, they are also packed with hundreds of proteins called growth factors. These growth factors are your body’s natural signalers for tissue repair and cellular regeneration.
During a PRP treatment, we take a small sample of your blood and concentrate these platelets. When I inject this powerful, platelet-rich serum directly into your damaged tissue, it accomplishes three critical things:

The Blood Draw: We draw a small amount of blood from your arm, exactly like a routine lab test.
Centrifugation: The blood is placed in a centrifuge, a medical device that spins rapidly to separate the healing platelets from the red and white blood cells.
The Precision Injection: Using advanced imaging to ensure pinpoint accuracy, I inject the concentrated PRP precisely into the damaged structure.
You might wonder why I don't just administer the injection by feeling the joint or tendon. In regenerative medicine, accuracy is everything. Even if an injection is off by just a millimeter, the concentrated growth factors won't reach the exact site of the tear or degeneration, reducing the effectiveness of the treatment.
By using live ultrasound guidance, I can see entirely beneath your skin in real-time. This allows me to:
Target the exact source of pain: I can track the tip of the needle and guide it precisely into the damaged microscopic fibers of a tendon or the specific worn-out area of a joint capsule.

Because PRP works by temporarily creating inflammation to kickstart the healing cascade, you should expect the injected area to feel sore, swollen, or stiff for the first 3 to 7 days. This is a normal and necessary part of the regenerative process.
To get the most out of your PRP therapy, the environment inside your body needs to be primed for healing. Your actions in the weeks surrounding the injection will make or break the treatment.
You must stop taking Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs) before and after your procedure. This includes common medications like:
Ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin)
Naproxen (Aleve)
Diclofenac, Meloxicam, or Celecoxib
High-dose Aspirin
Why? NSAIDs work by blocking the exact inflammatory pathways that PRP relies on to heal your tissue. If you take an NSAID, you are essentially turning off the "healing switch" the PRP just turned on, rendering the treatment ineffective.
Stop NSAIDs: 7 to 10 days before the injection.
Avoid NSAIDs: For at least 4 to 6 weeks after the injection.
(Note: If you need pain relief during this time, Acetaminophen/Paracetamol is generally safe, as it does not block the inflammatory healing cascade. Always confirm with me before taking any medication).
Hydration: Drink plenty of water in the days leading up to your blood draw. Well-hydrated blood yields better quality plasma.
Rest: For the first 48 hours after the injection, rest the affected area. Avoid heavy lifting or strenuous exercise.
Physical Therapy: After the initial resting phase, structured physical therapy is highly recommended. Moving the joint correctly helps the newly regenerating tissue align properly and gain strength.
Healing takes time. You may not notice significant improvement for 4 to 6 weeks as the new tissue builds, with maximum benefits often peaking around 3 to 6 months.
